In need of a new Backup

On Thursday (2011-07-21), LG somehow with the 2.3 update bricked my phone. I therefore had to get a new replacement from T-Mobile, and while they are sending it quickly (since it is under warranty), I have spent all of the weekend, and even a couple of additional days without a cellular phone. Now, my phone is more than just a phone for me. It helps with email so I don’t have to have the PC on all of the time. It is also my music player for when I am not home. It is also bus schedule information, and handles all of my contacts information without having to rely exclusively on the PC. So, it is more than just a phone that needs to be replaced, but has become an integral part of my personal life.

The back up phone was a Motorola Razr which my brother used, and it does not work properly any longer. This will now mean I need to get a new back up phone. And while going to get a new back up phone will not help for this time, it would be important for the future. Now, I am sure that someone could say just get a cheap prepaid phone, and you would be fine. If I was just making calls with my normal cellular number, that will probably be the case, however – I don’t.

Not much went on today. I created a FAQ for Talisa. I also wrote an email, and chatted with a friend for a few moments. I got a wrong number on a telephone call, and watched a DVD. In addition, I also decided to upgrade my Internet Service to include telephone, and Television. Right now, I don’t have a TV, but I will be using my PC as a TV with the use of the HDMI port I have. This is expected to be temporary as I am hoping to buy a new Television in July if I get my rent rebate. As for the telephone, it is actually cheaper to have the telephone line than not to have it. My phone supports both SIP, and POTS – so it would be just one phone needed for everything. This will also mean that 911 will be supported, although my cellular phone handles that as well. Almost all of my calls will still go out through the SIP line using my Google Voice account, but I will set up rules to force certain calls via POTS (such as calling my Google Voice number, or N11).

Not much else went on. As for plans for tomorrow, I will be hoping to go to the grocery store. It would depend on how I feel. Otherwise, no other plans for the most part. As for the actual internet service, for the most part – I am satisfied with it.

Not much went on today. I did go to the grocery store to get some food, and another store for something in particular. I also had to get a prescription. However, afterwards, I had to rest due to the ankles, but at least most of what needed to be done was taken care of. I also had some incoming phone calls, but it was of something that already was expected. Not much else was done today, and as for plans for tomorrow, I will be returning a Netflix disc, and otherwise – staying home.

Today was a busy day with not as much as I desired accomplished. I first had to go to a dental appointment where they wanted to make sure that everything was OK. Still, the dental surgery that is needed hasn’t been approved yet. Next, I had to go into Downtown to check my mail at the post office. Once I finished there, I headed to the bus stop and waited about 30 minutes for a bus to go back home. I would have sought to do grocery shopping, but the ankles were hurting a bit, and I still have food to last.

Once I got home, I made a call to the light company, and got my account number so I could try to make a payment ahead of time since I don’t expect my bill to come this week. As with all of my bills, I try to pay off in the first week of the month. I spent much of the day watching Hulu, and seeing that Netflix still hadn’t recognized my return of my disc yet. This means that there is less value in my dollar which is only irritating me at best.

Today was much like most days, however with an extra action. I had went to a local pizza shop to get a menu in case I should ever want it, and considering I have just moved here a couple of weeks ago, I want to know my options. I also made a phone call in trying to see if I can find a sleeper sofa. This apartment won’t handle a bedroom, and a wheelchair at the same time when that time comes. I also received a call from a company that is going to be completely unreasonable. No matter what I could do within reason of my abilities, it would not be good enough. So, I told them to do what they would have to do, and hung up. I set Google Voice to block their number so they won’t be calling me again. Yes, I am sure many would say that is the wrong way to do things, but considering that I would never be able to work things out with them on their part, there is no point in trying.

No plans for tomorrow. I am expecting Chris to com by. Otherwise, I will be home for the most part. I would also be expecting a DVD to come in from Netflix. If things work out, I should be able to drop the disc off the same day, and they should get it back the next day.

Today was quite a busy day. First, I had to go to to Section-8 where I had to deliver some documents. While I was there, I received an adjustment on what my rent will be. Nothing grandeur, nor life changing, but enough of a discount where I will be able to apply the “savings” to the electric bill. I also had to go on an errand to pay a bill, and would have wanted to pay another bill, but I have to wait for something else to come through first. While I was there, I also got a few groceries to hold for a week. By this time, my food benefits should come in.

Once I got home, I had to make a few phone calls. One of the calls were in regards to trying to get furniture I will need. I was then told to call another number which I will do tomorrow. I also notified the landlord of the adjustment in rent that took effect as of this month. This means I technically over-paid this month. However I will make those adjustments for next month’s rent rather than making him come to pay the difference.

Today was a long day especially since I didn’t get much sleep the night before. However, I managed to catch up on my daily posts, and made a call to T-Mobile about discounting the price of a new phone which they wouldn’t. It would seem as if it would be in my best interest to wait until July, and hopefully get the Samsung Galaxy S 2. So in the evening, I looked about for prices so I would have an idea on what I would have to deal with as far as costs. It would seem as if I can reasonably expect $700 for the 16GB model, and $800 for the 32GB model. If I get the rent rebate, and devote it all to the phone, I will be looking to have to break about $420 over 19 months. This will be about $22 on my phone bill, but I could get as much as 64Gb of capacity on my phone. However, I will still have to wait for T-Mobile to hopefully get it, and receive the rent rebate as well. Not much planned for tomorrow. I will be staying home, and will stay home until Tuesday where I will have a number of errands to address then. However, again – tomorrow I will stay home.

Today was a bit of a hectic day. I chatted a little with a friend, and went to the grocery store. This will most likely be the last time I will go to that particular store which I have been going for 10 years. However, I will have to move by the first of February, and don’t see it likely I will need to go there again.

Once I got home, I was in a bit of pain, and went online for a little, watched a few clips on Hulu, a show, and waited for the mail to come which it came a bit late. I also called my old ISP and requested to cancel the line I currently had, but they decide they are going to require that I print out a cancel form, and either fax or mail it to them. Really, there is a need for all of that. I did ask what I should do with the modem, they really don’t even care about it – which leads me to see how valued of a customer I am if they are giving hardware that isn’t important to them. Verizon iPhone – So?

A couple of days ago, the Verizon iPhone has been announced, and everyone is so happy. However, I am guessing these people that are thrilled probably don’t understand what just happened.

First, while the antenna position has been moved (due to frequency bands), it is estimated that it will not have the calling issues that AT&T faces – that is if the problem is the antenna. Next, the phone will be on CDMA. CDMA is obsolete technology in my opinion. Some of us remembers the days where you would be surfing the internet on your 56k modem, and a call came in, your ISP is dropped. Well CDMA is just a little better. You answer the call, and your data is dropped. Continue reading

Really, Just Use SIP!

Google Voice Via Gmail Being Tested so the Android Guys blog says. Okay, let’s see if I got this right. Google Voice is available through a voice gateway when used by Android, and RIM devices. This is done by the device calling a special phone number, and with your CID information, authenticates you to allow your phone to submit a phone number, and therefore calls that number showing your Google Voice number. A slight delay in completing the call, but makes sense when calling from a cell phone.

Now, keep in mind that Google bought Gizmo late 2009, and seem to be doing nothing with it since. Everyone speculated that they would run their own VOIP service, or at least offer better integration with Gizmo. And then suddenly, one would read the above headline.
